Skardu City is the capital of the district and a famous tourist hub where the Shigar River meets the mighty Indus River. It has a deep history, with traces of Tibetan, Mughal, and British influence. Millions of local and international tourists visit this amazing city every year.

This is considered one of the most scenic airports in the world! You'll fall in love with Skardu the moment you land. It now offers direct international flights (like from Dubai) and domestic flights from Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad. The airport has dramatically boosted tourism and makes the valley easy to access.

This unique rock formation recently gained fame because it looks a bit like the famous Trolltunga rock in Norway. It offers a challenging 3-4 hour climb from Hussainabad Village but rewards you with a panoramic view of the entire valley. You'll even pass the beautiful Hussainabad Waterfall on the way, like an oasis!

This carving proves that Buddhism once had a strong presence in the region long ago. This huge Buddha is carved into a granite rock in Manthal Village, about 3 km from Skardu City. It is a holy site for Buddhists and a perfectly preserved historical treasure for all visitors.

This highway, the Jaglot-Skardu Road (S-1), is the vital 167 km link between the Karakoram Highway (KKH) and Skardu City. Although it sometimes faces landslides, it is crucial for tourism and for bringing essential goods to the local people. It's your main route into the heart of the Skardu region.

Referred to as the "Roof of The World," this massive plateau sits at 4,114 meters and is the second highest plateau globally. It means "The Land of Giants" and is protected as a National Park, famous for the rare Himalayan Brown Bears. It's closed from November to May due to heavy snow and features stunning lakes like Sheosar and Talkhumbo.

This is a beautiful natural glacial lake located only about 7 km from Skardu City, surrounded by rocky mountains. Its size grew when the Satpara Dam was built on it in 2013 to provide water and electricity to Skardu. The lake's water is essential for drinking and farming in the region.

Located in the very heart of the Deosai Plains, this stunning alpine lake is fed by glacial meltwater. It's only accessible for about 5-6 months a year (May to November) due to extreme winter snow. On clear days, you can see the imposing Nanga Parbat from the lake, and the surroundings are carpeted with colorful wildflowers.

Often called "Heaven on Earth," this was the first resort of its kind in Northern Pakistan. Beautiful cottages sit around the artificial, heart-shaped Lower Kachura Lake (Shangrila Lake). It offers a magical, serene experience with fish swimming in the lake and rocky mountains towering above.

This is a gorgeous alpine glacial lake reached by a short 15-20 minutes trek through the old Kachura Village. The walk is a bonus, allowing you to see local life, and the lake is crowned by mighty mountains and thick Deodar trees. It's a perfect picnic spot offering activities like boating and jet skiing.

Shigar is the gateway to the world's most impressive peaks, like K2, Broad Peak, and Golden Peak. Askole, the last village before the wild mountains, is located here, as are huge glaciers like Baltoro and Biafo. The valley is accessible by a metalled road from Skardu and is rich in historical importance.

An impressive 450-year-old fort from the 17th century, originally built for the Rajas of Shigar Valley. Part of the fort has been converted into the luxurious Serena Shigar Fort hotel, restoring its royal charm. It includes a museum, the beautiful Anchan Garden and a small 12 door structure called "Baradari."

Skardu is home to the world's unique 'cold deserts,' like Katpana and Sarfaranga. Katpana Desert is right next to Skardu Airport and offers hotels, glamping, and the small Katpana Lake. Sarfaranga Desert, the highest desert in Pakistan, hosts the annual Desert Jeep Rally and activities like paramotor gliding.

Khaplu is a district capital located about 3 hours from Skardu, where the Shyok River merges with the Indus River. The Shyok River enters Pakistan from the Ladakh Valley here. Khaplu was historically important as a key trade route between Ladakh and Gilgit Baltistan.

Also known as "Yabgo Khar," this fort was built in the mid-19th century for the Raja (Ruler) of Khaplu. The fort was magically built where a huge stone thrown from a nearby mountain landed. Part of it is now the luxurious Serena Khaplu Fort, which also houses a museum preserving royal history.

This is a nearly 700-year-old mosque built by Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, who brought Islam to the valley. The mosque's design beautifully combines Kashmiri, Mughal and Tibetan building styles. Its colorful and printed interior walls make it a bright and unique place of worship.

Also called "The King of Forts," this was built by Baltistani King Ali Sher Khan Anchan in 1840. The ruins of this fort sit behind the main market in Skardu City, reached by a narrow, steep track. From the fort, you get a stunning aerial view of Skardu City and the surrounding area.

Nansoq Village is known as the Organic Village because its residents maintain the ancient, sustainable lifestyle of the Balti people. Everything, from farming to house building, shows how people lived long ago. It is located right next to the Kharpocho Fort, offering a beautiful glimpse into the past.

Astore was closed for a long time but has recently opened its gates to everyone. You can access it from the Karakoram Highway (KKH) at Jaglot or from the Deosai Plains. Astore is home to dozens of stunning locations, including Rama Meadows, Rupal Valley, and many alpine lakes.

A jeep track from Astore leads you to the beautiful Rama Meadows, where you can set up camp. A simple 1 to 1.5-hour trek takes you to Rama Lake, which sits shadowed by the massive Nanga Parbat. This is a very popular spot for both trekkers and adventure riders.

This valley is famous because it is home to the Rupal Face, the southern side of the mighty Nanga Parbat. A jeep track leads you through Tarshing Village and Chhungphar Glacier to a camping site near the basecamp. It's one of the most easily accessible basecamps of an 8,000 meter peak in the world!
The people of Skardu are known for their rich Balti culture and traditions. Both men and women are skilled in traditional crafts including hand-woven textiles, embroidery, and unique Balti cuisine. The region has a strong cultural heritage with traditional music, dance, and festivals that reflect the unique identity of the Balti people.
